Daniel

Daniel H. Stark

Principal / Creative Director
Daniel Stark is part designer, part inventor and just a little hooked on making everything custom. He loves solving problems…and the challenge of making the solutions simple, elegant and smart. Because of his incredibly diverse background in advertising, publishing, apparel, media and design, Stark decided to create Stark Design as a company that can take on almost any design project. In 2003, he opened his studio in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood. Though Daniel is the force behind Stark Design, he draws energy from the talented individuals that make up his team.

Daniel Stark has created well-known advertising campaigns, identity programs, packaging, editorial and product design for a diverse assortment of consumer brands, services and companies. Early in his career, Stark worked for renowned figures Milton Glaser, Fabien Baron, and Annie Leibovitz (not all at once, though). He worked on the staffs of Harper’s Bazaar, GQ and US magazines and served as the V.P. Creative Director for Ann Taylor and Nielsen Business Media. In 2006, Daniel created and co-authored the book Stoked: The Evolution of Action Sports and designed Andy Warhol: The Day the Factory Died, both of which won several awards. More recently, Stark designed Patrick McMullan’s Glamour Girls, Gina LeVay’s Sandhogs, and has developed or designed at least six other titles (some of which are to be published in 2012).

Daniel holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design and lives in New York City with his wife.

Nancy

Nancy Herrmann

Associate Creative Director
Nancy Herrmann may prefer to be snowboarding down a mountain or sailing somewhere idyllic but she assures everyone that she’s equally happy to be in the office. Truth is, Nancy is an accomplished designer, trained architect, published design journalist, patent holder and prolific sports blogger. Her diverse interests and professional background are the perfect fit for Stark Design, where she oversees the lion’s share of packaging and retail projects.

Nancy began her career working for fashion designers Michael Kors and Norma Kamali before altering course and heading back to school for two Masters degrees. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to work on the retail store and interactive media team at Virgin Entertainment Group. Her East Coast roots called her back to New York where she eventually joined L’Oréal Paris as Art Director. For more than six years, Nancy was responsible for design and direction of packaging, merchandising and marketing collateral for this international beauty brand.

In the publishing world, Nancy’s experience is noteworthy: She was a design editor at I.D. (International Design) Magazine and has written for Wallpaper*, Frank, Men’s Health and Architectural Record, among others. Nancy holds a Master of Architecture degree and a MFA Digital Design and Technology degree from Parsons School of Design as well as a B.S. degree in Clothing and Textiles from Virginia Tech.

Nancy happily resides in New York City, when she’s not off pursuing some sporting adventure.

Carly2

Carly Dintaman

Art Director
Carly may have grown up in a small cow-surrounded Pennsylvania town, but her ideas are as big as her contributions to Stark Design. Since joining our team in 2010, she has her hands in almost everything here, from packaging and branding to our own website redesign. She’s also our in-house detective and the go-to-girl for anything we need to figure out. When not at the office, Carly is most likely painting the town red (her favorite color) or consuming fancy cheeses and wine.

Carly has a BBA in Design & Management from Parsons School of Design.

Kohl

Kohl Norville

Creative Director / Commercial Director
Kohl Norville has always had an eye toward filmmaking. After a short time as a graphic designer for the Cartoon Network, Gary Goldsmith hired Kohl in 1998 as an Art Director at Lowe New York, where he worked on the Sprite, Heineken, Amstel Light and GMC accounts. With the Amstel Light account being a predominant focus, Kohl and Dave Rackowiki spearheaded the Amstel Light TV and print campaign that earned the brand a Bronze Effie by raising Amstel Light’s overall revenue growth 30 percent.

Under Lee Garfinkel at Lowe, Kohl wrote and directed a Heineken commercial for the 2000 Olympics, receiving praise from Adweek and The Wall Street Journal. Subsequently, he was asked to write and direct a three spot campaign for Heineken tailored around music celebrities. During his first year with Element Productions in 2002 Kohl continued to hone his skills. He earned advertising kudos when given the honor to be part of the Y&R “Young Gun Director Showcase,” an annual program for directors.

With Z Group Films, Kohl topped the AdCritic charts for his work for ESPN in 2004. His directing has consistently received numerous honors. A spot for M.A.D.D. that he wrote and directed made the Cannes Lions shortlist. Two other spots through Euro RSCG for Chelsea Guitars were awarded to the Cannes Lions shortlist the following year.

In addition, Kohl’s work for Virgin Mobile through Fallon NY won a Silver Cannes Lion in 2005. That same year, the Virgin Mobile spot won top praise from the Association of Independent Commercial Producers by receiving AICP’s highest honor, The AICP Advertising Excellence. The Virgin Mobile commercial is now part of the permanent collection of MoMA’s Department of Film and Media. Soon after, a website for KFC that Kohl directed won The Webby Award in 2007, hailed as “The Oscars of the Internet” by The New York Times. He shot 75 different scenarios for the KFC interactive website, which takes visitors through various plot twists depending on the KFC flavor choice they pick. The story can turn in several different ways, lasting over an hour.

His most recent work includes spots for Arnold/ McDonalds, Element 79/Quaker & Reddi-Wip and BBDO/ Lottery.
